2022 11 23 frontpageA new master study program Music Production was developed by the Academy of Arts University of Novi Sad (P2) and submitted for accreditation to the National Entity for Accreditation on 21 December 2022 and it was finally awarded the accreditation. The master programme in Music Production is designed as a one-year program (60 ECTS) in which the student acquire, a high level of knowledge and artistic expression in the field of music production.

Fourth generation of students enrolled to the Applied Research of Music (PRIMA) MA study program

2022 11 23 frontpageIn October 2023, a new generation of seven students enrolled in the Applied Research of Music (PRIMA) MA study program in the academic 2023/2024 year. During their one-year studies, students will integrate the application of knowledge, concepts, and methods in music research from the perspective of new technologies, entrepreneurship, and work with audiences in wider social contexts. Their final master projects will be original music projects.

Teaching materials for new and modernized study programs published and available

2022 11 23 frontpageThirteen new teaching materials for music students of new master and modernized bachelor and master study programs at national HMEIs (P1-P3) have been developed in the frame of WP 3.3, and made available. The format of the teaching and learning materials is diverse, ranging from student workbooks, manuals for learning and exam preparation, video tutorials, to e- and printed textbooks.

Application Virtual exhibition The Music/ian is Present available

2022 11 23 frontpagePublic presentations of student socially engaged projects, realized in September 2022 in Novi Sad in the frame of The Music/ian is Present event, are getting a whole new dimension in the application developed by Dimitrije Cvetković from Mad Head Games (P10). The open-source application is conceived as a virtual tour through a 3D space resembling an art gallery, which hosts images and recordings of the four group student projects focused on for specifically targeted audiences (vulnerable and marginalized groups: children, elderly, socially deprived youth), drawing attention to particular issues of current society in Serbia as seen by music students.

LLL courses on development of digital skills held in December

2022 11 23 frontpageFive LLL courses focused on enhancement of digital skills and knowledge in music teachers
and music professionals working in the pre-college level music and general education schools,
developed by teachers of the Faculty of Music in Belgrade (Partner 1), Academy of Arts in Novi
Sad (Partner 2) and the Faculty of Philology and Arts in Kragujevac (Partner 3) in the frame of
the project DEMUSIS, were held online in December 2022. Over 150 music teachers from all
over the country attended the courses Digital classical music resources as contribution to the
enhancement of music teaching
(held on 21–26 December by P1), Music education in digital
environment
(held on 26 November – 3 December by P2), Creating digital matrix for children
music performance, Digital arranging and production of audio and video materials for online
music teaching and entertainment-educational platforms and Digital tools in music education

(held from 14 November to 17 December by P3). All courses were highly evaluated, scoring
from 3.74 to 4.00, on the scale 0 to 4, in the anonymous quality survey conducted by ZUOV
(National Institute for Improvement of Education). In addition to the online ones, the course
Digital music literacy, developed by P2, was held in presence, while another one is planned for
2023.
Implementation of LLL courses is one the key project milestones and part of the work package
5, following their accreditation in June by the National Institute for Improvement of Education.

Learning materials for LLL courses prepared

2022 11 23 frontpageFor thirteen LLL courses developed by national academic partners and accredited by the National Institute for Improvement of Education in June 2022, corresponding learning materials have been produced. Following the diversity of topics and approaches offered through LLL courses, learning materials reflect that variety in content and formats, ranging from e-handbooks and manuals, video tutorials, PowerPoint presentations, to online platforms, both with open access and those available only for course attendees, specifically created for these courses.

Final annual Project Management Board meeting held in Belgrade from 30 November to 2 December 2022

The meeting was focused on the  reparations for the final project report, due two months after the project’s end at the latest, along with the sustainability issues and future cooperation actions.

More LLL courses held in October and November by P2 and P3

2022 11 21 frontpageFollowing the successful start of LLL courses in September, four more seminars for music professionals and teachers in pre-university music education were realized in the past month by teachers from the Academy of Arts University of Novi Sad (P2) and the Faculty of Philology and Arts University of Kragujevac (P3). The interest for attending the courses is huge, with the number of participants in only half of the planned courses already exceeding the number envisioned by project application for all the LLL courses developed within the project. Such an interest successfully confirms the topicality of the DEMUSIS themes (digital and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, with musicians’ communication with society) for the wider music community in Serbia.

Guest lectures and workshops for fostering career and entrepreneurial skills of music students from national music academies held in October and early November 2022

2022 11 22 frontpageOver 70 students and teachers from national academic partner institutions in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Kragujevac took part in guest lectures and workshops conducted by visiting teachers from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague (P4) in late October and early November. The teaching sessions by Martin Prchal (25-28 October), Heloisa Amaral (1-10 November) and Felix Schlarmann (7-10 November) included lectures with small practical assignments, various workshops and discussion groups, the last one concluding with the development and performance of one experimental concert. They were largely dedicated, but not limited to, the topics of career and entrepreneurial skills for musicians, with topics such as music curatorship, communication, organizational, reflective and other career skills, along with development of quality culture, all leading to exploring possibilities of linking student’s artistic ambitions with professional future.
The visiting teaching was realized as part of the WP 4.3 activities regarding the implementation of modernized and new study programs at P1-P3.

Second generation of students enrolled to new MA study programs successfully graduated

2022 10 25 frontpageIn September 2022, students enrolled in 2020 and 2021 to two master study programs developed and implemented within the DEMUSIS project – that of Music Direction and Applied Research of Music (PRIMA), successfully defended their master projects and thesis and graduated from the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade. With Music Direction being two-year study program of a distinct profile, these graduates became first ever masters of music direction in country and the region. Previously, the fall of 2021 was marked by graduation of first generation of students of the PRIMA master study program.
Music Direction and Applied Research of Music were first implemented in the academic year 2020/21 in the framework of the project DEMUSIS.

Development of the internal quality culture in music students within the bootcamp for music students The Music/ian is Present

2022 10 20b frontpageMusic student bootcamp The Music/ian is Present, organized as part of the one-week event held in Novi Sad 12-17 September 2022, as a platform for internal quality culture in students in cooperation with the Royal Conservatoire the Hague (P4) and project Quality Assurance Group members. Twenty students from Belgrade, Novi Sad and Kragujevac (P1-P3) explored the meaning of quality through workshops, exercises, discussion and evaluation sessions and applied quality assurance measures in their group projects focused on communication with socially vulnerable groups. Quality standards in artistry and artistic vision, activity design, organization and execution were, therefore, followed and reflected upon in the development of their own small-scale community active music project. A special attention was given to (self)evaluation processes, which were considered also in the final public presentation of student projects attended by the project external evaluator.

LLL courses accredited by the National Institute for Improvement of Education

2022 07 06 frontpageFourteen lifelong learning (LLL) courses, designed and submitted by national academic partner institutions (P1-P3), have been accredited by the National Institute for Improvement of Education – ZUOV on 29 June 2022. The courses, pertaining to all three main project fields (digital competencies in music, music entrepreneurship and social engagement of academic musicians), are accredited for the period of the next three academic years, starting from the fall 2022.
Development, accreditation and implementation of LLL courses belongs to project work package 5, covering project’s specific objective of continuing professional development for music professionals.

2022 03 22 frontpageThe Project Management Board met online on 1st of June to discuss and plan the key project dissemination event (WP 7.7) entitled Music/ian is Present, to be held on 12-17 September 2022. The event will address the third project objective – promotion of more engaged and culturally responsible musicians committed to the civil society, from diverse perspectives. It will include a bootcamp for P1-P3 students with public presentations of student projects (WP 7.6) from 12-16 September, a scientific conference with roundtable presentations by invited speakers from P1-P9, and a Public debate as key dissemination event on 17 September with participation of all partners, in addition to the representatives of governmental, regional and EU institutions, as well as distinguished public figures in the sphere of music and culture.

NBU teaching visit to Serbian HMEIs realized in May 2022

2022 03 22 frontpageFrom May 11th to 20th 2022, six teachers from New Bulgarian University (P5) came to their first live teaching visit to music academies in Belgrade (P1), Novi Sad (P2) and Kragujevac (P3). During their stay in Serbia, Simo Lazarov, Emil Traichev, Tsanimir Baychev, Natalia Afeyan, Pavlina Velichkova I Margarita Marionova Krusteva-Stoichevska offered lectures, workshops and Q&A session in the field of digital and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to over 100 music students of the BA and MA study programs reformed during the DEMUSIS project, as well as to 13 students of two master programs introduced at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) in the framework of the project. In addition, the teaching visit included a live follow-up to teacher training in project fields, previously held online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

Heloisa Amaral’s teaching visit to P1 and P2

2022 09 28 frontpageHeloisa Amaral, lecturer in artistic research and curatorial practices in music at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague (P4) was in a teaching visit to the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) and the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad (P2) from 10 to 15 April 2022. Her visit included lectures and Q&A sessions entitled Yearning to Connect: A Short Introduction to Music Curatorship, with students of modernized BA studies of Music performance and Music sciences, as well as with students of two new master programs Applied Research of Music and Music Direction from P1. Moreover, talks with teachers with exchange of experience and good practice were organized in each host institution.
Teaching visits from EU (P4–P6) to national (P1–P3) academic partner institutions are being realized within project activity 4.3 – Implementation of new and modernized study programs.

Student placements in Radio-Television Serbia fully realized in 2021/22

RTS logoTen students from national academic partner institutions (P1-P3) had the opportunity to test and broaden their knowledge acquired in new and modernized studies through two-week practical placements in the national broadcasting service Radio-Television of Serbia (P7) in two rounds during the academic year 2021/22 - from 15-26 November 2021 and 6-9 April 2022. Students of new MA study programs Music Direction and Applied Research of Music from the Faculty of Music in Belgrade (P1), along with their colleagues from MA studies Music and Media from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (P2) and BA Music in Media from the Faculty of Philology and Arts in Kragujevac (P3) gained practical experience in radio and television studios, recording and editing studios and music production.

Martin Prchal’s visit to P1 and P3 from 29 March to 3 April 2022

The vice-principal of the Royal Conservatoire exploring linking music entrepreneurship and integration of artistic practice and ambitions with professional identities and integration, with students of BA and MA study programs modernized and introduced in the framework of DEMUSIS project WP 4.3. In addition, his visit included meetings with teachers and management of both HMEIs discussing and exchanging ideas on curricular development, organization of teaching, on the continuation of collaboration and sustainability of project results.

In their master theses the students demonstrated the implementation of the acquired applied knowledge in the field of music entrepreneurship, social engagements of musicians and understanding of digital technologies, in designing their original music projects addressed to specific social groups as new audiences.

During the period of over two weeks, students from the MA Music Direction study program and BA Music Production study program from P1 and P2 had the opportunity to explore from various perspectives, video games as a medium, to learn more about the specifics of audio content in video games and its implementations, as well as to try themselves out in practical assignments.

Mantautas Krukauskas’ teaching visit to Serbian HMEIs on 12–20 December 2021

2022 03 24 frontpageMantautas Krukauskas, Associated Professor from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius (P6) and Head of LMTA Music Innovation Studies Centre, carried out the first live teaching visit to Serbian academic partner institutions in the DEMUSIS project on 12-20 December 2021. Over 50 students of BA and MA modernized studies from the Academy of Arts University of Novi Sad (P2) and the Faculty of Philology and Arts University of Kragujevac (P3) and new MA study program Music Direction from the Faculty of Music University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) took part in lectures, workshops, demonstrations and discussions on innovative practices in music, ambisonics and spatial audio, sound design tools and other related topics in the field of digital skills for musicians and music production. His visit also included a live follow-up to teacher training conducted online in December 2020 at all three music academies, which included lively discussions and exchange of knowledge and good practice in teaching and work in sound art.

DEMUSIS project outputs presented at the 2021 China – CEEC Forum of Music Academy Deans and Rectors

2021 12 07 front page chinaThe Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) took part in the Third Forum of Music Academies from China and Central and Eastern Europe held online on November 4th 2021, presenting the international collaboration of the Faculty of Music in the context of COVID-19 pandemic.

The backbone of the Faculty of Music activities in the field of international collaboration during this time were realized in the framework of the DEMUSIS project. In her presentation, Dragana Jovanović, head of the Center for International Cooperation, particularly addressed actions and outputs produced in teaching (WP4.3) and teacher training (WP3.1), as well as in music performance (WP4.3).

First student placements in Mad Head Games

Four students of new master study program Applied Research of Music (PRIMA) at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade (P1) and two students of updated master study program Music in Media, introduced and modernized in academic year 2020/21, had an opportunity to test and broaden their knowledge on gaming industry, particularly in the field of music and sound production for video games. In accordance with ongoing measures to control the spread of disease COVID-19 in Serbia, the student practice was carried out completely online.

DEMUSIS project eligibility period extended for 12 months

Due to the unfavorable epidemic situation related to COVID-19 in Serbia and EU, the meeting was held online instead at the University of Kragujevac (P3).
The meeting covered updates on the project, realization of project activities in 2020 according to the work packages and plans for 2021. Dealing with all the constraints imposed by the coronavirus outbreak was particularly considered, along with discussions on mitigating its effect on project implementation in 2021.

In a friendly and constructive atmosphere, the Quality Assurance Group’s (QAG) annual work was reviewed. The QAG chair introduced the Annual Report for 2020, while the members of the Group presented and discussed individual short Quality Monitoring Reports for deliverables completed in 2020.
The updated Project Quality Action Plan was subsequently adopted by the Project Management Board at the annual meeting 10-11 December 2020.

Teacher training at the New Bulgarian University realized 21-22 December 2020

Logo New Bulgarian UniversityTeacher training for curricular changes and LLL courses at national academic partner institutions (P1-P3) was implemented in an online format on 21-22 December 2020 by teachers from the New Bulgarian University (P5). During the intensive training, 21 teachers and members of staff from the Serbian HMEIs were trained by 10 teachers from the Bulgarian academic partner. The training covered topics related to main project thematic fields: digital competencies including distance music teaching methods, music teaching using Moodle platform and distance learning with examples and good practices, music entrepreneurship and music in society, including rising awareness of the role and visibility of professional musicians in society and social commitment of musicians.

2021 01 11 front pageIn the framework of project activity 3.2 of the work package 3 Staff training and development of teaching resources, 29 teachers and staff members of the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) were trained for the use of the distance learning platform. Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in Serbia, the three-day training was held online, on the eLearning platform for distance learning, from 14th to 18th of December 2020. After the general part of the training, further individual consultations or work in smaller groups on specific problems in music distance teaching and learning was offered, to be held by the end of December 2020. The training was led by the Head of the University of Belgrade Computer Centre prof. dr Slavko Gajin.

New Master Study Program Applied Research in Music launched at P1

2020 11 04 frontpage newsThe new master study program Applied Research in Music starts at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) in the fall semester 2020/21.

It is the second new master academic study program developed at this Serbian HMEI within DEMUSIS project in 2019/20 and accredited by the National Entity for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education in 2020. The academic EU partner institutions – The Royal Conservatoire the Hague (P4), The New Bulgarian University (P5) and Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (P6) – were strongly involved in development of the study program, with non-academic partners P7-P9 actively participating in defining student competencies and learning outcomes from stakeholder’s perspective.

The call for student applications was open on 26-27 October, entrance exam scheduled for 30 October 2020, with the studies starting in November 2020 after student enrollment.

The main objective of Applied Research in Music study program is to educate students of an innovative profile, in accordance with dynamic changes in 21st century in the field of music. The study program is conceived in a way to ensure acquirement of knowledge, competencies and skills essential for students’ inclusion in contemporary creative industries, working in both public or private, commercial or non-profit sector. Graduated students will therefore build an awareness of the importance of balance between academic research and business and commercial sector’s needs.

Online courses realized in Spring 2020

2020 09 23 frontpage newsThe pandemic and measures it imposed on teaching and learning meant also the sudden and unavoidable transfer to online teaching and learning, pushing in that way some project activities forward time-wise, in comparison to the initial timeline (courses were to be implemented in third project year, September-December 2021). In consequence, preparation of online courses, teacher training for use of distance learning platforms, and implementation of first online courses were done simultaneously in Spring 2020 at the national music academic institutions P1-P3, and to the great effect. Overall, three new and five modernized courses were implemented at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade (P1), the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad (P2) and the Faculty of Philology and Arts, University of Kragujevac (P3), with 70 students and 26 teachers involved.

The courses were realized during the lockdown of universities from March to June 2020, using Moodle-based distance learning platforms developed at these national academic institutions, along with other communication applications and tools, such as Zoom platform, YouTube channels, Trello boards, Google Classroom, Google Meet, etc.

Distance learning platforms developed and in use at national HMEIs

2020 09 21 frontpage newsNational academic partners – University of Arts in Belgrade (P1), University of Novi Sad (P2) and University of Kragujevac (P3), have developed or modified, and put to use distance learning platforms based on Moodle, open-source online learning platform. The Faculty of Philology and Arts of the University in Kragujevac installed and implemented eUčenje [eLearning] distance learning platform in April 2019, the University of Novi Sad introduced a new distance learning platform eLab which was modified and put to use at the Academy of Arts in Spring 2020, whereas University of Belgrade offered the University of Arts in Belgrade in Spring 2020 to use eLearning portal, adequate for answering the needs of music teaching and learning.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, online courses were prepared and implemented at the three academic partner institutions almost simultaneously with the adoption of distance learning platforms.

The new equipment was set-up and used for realization of new and modernized courses in academic year 2019/20. The upgrade of digital and media laboratories was accompanied by upgrade of infrastructure, such as the new network and electricity installation at P3.

New master study program Music Direction at P1 to start in October 2020

2020 08 25 frontpage music directionThe new master study program Music Direction at the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) acquired accreditation of the National Entity for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education on July 6th, 2020. The call for student applications will be open in September, with the studies starting in October 2020.

Music Direction master program, one of the two to be introduced through DEMUSIS project, aims at shaping music professionals skilled in diverse creative processes and various aspects of production of music. Aims of this study program are coordinated with the requirements of modern creative industries in the domestic and international context, as well as with the strategy of development of the use of digital technologies. The study program Music Direction is correlated with worldwide contemporary art and pedagogical trends and is comparable to similar programs at foreign higher education institutions. The study program and curriculum was developed in 2019/20 at P1, with an active participation of EU partner institutions – the New Bulgarian University (P5) and Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (P6).

2020 07 13 frontpage news MusiQuEThe Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade underwent an institutional quality enhancement review MusiQuE – Music Quality Enhancement, European independent accreditation and external evaluation body for music, affiliate of European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education – ENQA and registered on the European Quality Assurance Register (EQAR), dedicated to the continuous improvement of the quality of higher music education across Europe and beyond. As a result, the Faculty of Music in Belgrade has become the only higher education institution in country and region reviewed positively by MusiQuE, confirming in such a way high level of alignment with European standards of higher music education.
The Institutional review of the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade, concludes an important part of activities in project work package 1 – Preparation and Analysis (WP 1.1) which sets the foundation for further project activities by conducting both internal and external assessment of the existing programmes at national HMEIs and to develop new modernised curricula by putting the greater focus on digital media and entrepreneurship.

Students enrolled to modernized study programs

2019 10 24 image news CurriculumIn October, students have been enrolled to modernized study programs at national HMEIs, thus completing the first activity in WP 4 – Implementation of reformed and new study programs. Current study programs are reformed by embedding the digital competences and entrepreneurial skills into the competence sets of music graduates at various levels. Furthermore, new compulsory and elective courses were introduced to study programs at P1-P3. Previously, all curricular changes were adopted by relevant institutional bodies. They also aim to cause the mindset change enabling students to adopt entrepreneurial approach and learn not only how to use current digital technologies in their main field, but also how to be a life-long learners in contemporary environment.

PragueDEMUSIS project was presented on the 2019 Annual Meeting for International Relations Coordinators (IRCs) which took place at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Czech Republic) from 19 to 22 September under the title "The Pink Elephant: Reflections on the Future to Transform the Present", in the framework of the AEC-Strengthening Music in Society (SMS) Project supported by the Creative Europe Programme. The project presentation by Dušanka Jelenković Vidović, project administrator and international relations coordinator at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade, on Sunday September 22nd was followed by a fruitful discussion moderated by Payam Gul Susanni, SMS WG3 on Entrepreneurship at AEC.

The study visit was focused on the realization of the entrepreneurial boot camp entitled A Musicians Footprint for the 3rd year Bachelor Students from the Classical Music and Vocal Studies departments of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
